Copyright June, 2000 - 2007 Reprinted with the author's kind permission What started as an ordinary interest in and liking for German Shepherd Dogs has become an obsession to understand the marvelous character of the working German Shepherd Dog because its versatility and greatness seems to surpass all the rest. My search for understanding has been greatly illuminated by Schutzhund training. Through it and the people I have met in Schutzhund, I have gained access to an ever-widening literature and videos about working dogs, especially German Shepherd Dogs. |

The German Shepherd Dog is the most wonderful breed of dogs, but is he a dog for you? Casey, one of our rescue girls Time and companionship. German Shepherd Dogs have a very strong pack or group drive. It means that in order to function properly they must have a very strong sense of belonging. They have to be a member of a family. The size of the family is not important; one person or five makes no difference to a German Shepherd Dog. What is important is that the dog is part of it. They need to be around you and do things with you. If this fundamental need is not met, the German Shepherd Dog is very likely to become a problem dog. GSD does not do well tied out in the backyard or left alone for extended periods. Consider your lifestyle and household schedule - do you travel a lot, do you work long hours, are you busy with your children’s activities? Do you see the GSD as an integral part of your lifestyle and schedule? Personality and children. German Shepherd Dogs are usually active, inquisitive, alert, nosey, sometimes aloof, sometimes exuberant, often protective dogs. Most are outgoing with family members and are more reserved with strangers, some are very demonstrative of their affection for you, and others are more standoffish. German Shepherd Dogs are extremely tolerant of children in the family, but not always of their friends and when frustrated may growl and snap. They might perceive rough play between children as a threat to 'their' children and might try to protect them. For this reason, no dog should be left alone with children under 14. |

Over a jump So, I want my dog to do something... whatever that is is not really important...
There are two basic approaches to make the dog do what I want... Let me tell you the story to illustrate those two distinctly different approaches: Once upon the time, the SUN and the WIND started to argue which one of them was more powerful than the other... 'I can melt the ice, can you?' SUN said. 'But I can break that tall tree in half, can you? said the WIND. They continued to argue when they saw a man walking down the road, whistling happily, enjoying the first spring day... The man was wearing a nice brown coat... The WIND exclaimed: This will be the test... whoever takes the coat off this man faster is a WINNER... I'll go first... |

Carter and his food dish This is a very important and serious issue with potentially serious consequences, so please read carefully and ask for clarification if you have the slightest doubt about dealing with this problem.
We get many dogs arriving in the rescue who are defensive about their food, bones, or toys, often this is a reason the dog has to leave his family...
As a matter of fact one of our boys who was only 9 months old when we got him was extremely defensive of his food and water bowls in his original home. He would growl and snap at anyone who would approach his "property". When he "attacked" a young child in the family, her father, pup's owner hit the dog to punish him for this behaviour and the pup attacked him sending him to the emergency for some 50+ stitches.
When I first met this dog when his owner dropped him off, the dog had absolutely no concept of relating to people. He totally ignored not only myself but his owner, as if this man did not exist - there was absolutely no bond of any kind between those two... |

Spay, Neuter, and CancerReprinted with Dr.Milani's permission from MMilani.com
dr. Myrna Milani Perhaps no aspect of pet ownership in the U.S. elicits as passionately supportive emotions as the subject of spay and neuter. In fact, this orientation is so well established that saying anything that questions the procedure is akin to blasphemy. However, just as women were routinely relieved of their reproductive organs with a "La de da, you'll never miss 'em" attitude until studies exploring the nonreproductive effects of reproductive hormones made human physicians rethink this position, so veterinarians and other animal-care professionals are making tentative moves to rethink wholesale sterilization of companion animals, too. |

Blue Buffalo Dog Food
Blue Buffalo is one of the best, if not THE BEST pet food companies out there. They are American made and do not have corn, wheat or soy in their food. They have three different wilderness options to choose from, a whole line of small breed and large breed foods, so your pets have protein options, which is very important. You need to switch protein sources every once in a while. We change every 4 months, some people like every 6. I say do what works for you but do NOT feed the same food for over 6 months. Your pet can develop sensitivities and allergies to an ingredient, so you need to change it up. Check out this to confirm that statement: http://www.addictionfoods.com/resources/RotationFeeding.pdfPeople who complain about their dogs getting sick are probably switching foods too fast. Every dog is different, we have 6 dogs, and some HAVE to switch foods slower than others. I can change some dogs over to a new/different protein source in 2-3 days and other dogs I switch slower over a week or two because they have issues. Science Diet is a terrible food. Anyone to has tried Blue Buffalo and did NOT give their dog a chance to adjust to the food and then returns to SD is just doing their pet a HUGE injustice. Feeding a food like SD that has NO good meat protein source, is full of corn, soy and other non nutritious ingredients is NOT healthy for your pets. I don’t care what your vet says, GET ANOTHER VET! I use a holistic vet and she only recommends foods that do not contain corn, wheat or soy. I will not use a vet that sells SD in their clinic because if they do not know basic nutrition information, how can they be medically competent? Give Blue Buffalo food a really GOOD try and then comment. Have your medium size dog go through a 30 lb bag, or have your small dog go through a 15 lb bag. If they are still having loose stool after 3-4 weeks, or a full bag, then their may be a protein or other ingredient that they have issues with. There is NO MIRACLE FOOD for every dog! They are all different just like we are! If the chicken doesn’t work for your dog, try the lamb or fish. The have a limited ingredient diet now called Blue Basics, give that a try if have issues with the regular food. I hope that this info helps. I love my pets, and I have used other premium brands and I like them as well, but I think that Blue is the best.
